This amazingly-designed artwork has been featured here:
Top 10 Illustrations of Athena – Goddess of Wisdom

That article is part of the session called Olympian Gods and Goddesses of Greek Mythology. It is basically a series of articles dedicated to collect the beautiful and real looking images of the Olympians.

I loved Athena from the Incredible Herc series. Not sure about the direction of the story at this time, but She's still one of the coolest Olympians of both (major) comic universes.

I have seen your work in Incredible Hercules and have always enjoyed it. There is just one thing that has continuously bugged me about this design of Athena that maybe as an artist you can shed some light on.

When designing a character or working on one what type of thought do you put into designing their weapons? I know unusual or unrealistic weapons tend to be favorites in some fantasy settings or for some artists, but I have never quite understood how they were expected to be used.

As an artist when working on a character that is either going to be armed with a weapon or going to be in a fight scene how much thought goes into what type of armament they have and how practical it is? What if the design is based on a previous design? Do you ever feel the need to change it up any?

I ask in this case in relation to Athena's double lance. I admit I have seen the double lance in other settings, but whenever I try to picture how this weapon is used I cannot get a good idea around it.

Great art and I look forward to your work on Cho: Prince of Power

Thanks, Seekquaze.

That's actually a really good question. She already had this design when I started working on the book, so it's not exactly how I would have made her if I'd been the one to originally design her in the first place, although I do think it's a pretty cool design.
When I design characters, I take the character's personality into consideration as much as the functionality of what they're wearing, and you can see that in the characters I have designed, such as Bob: Agent of Hydra or Amadeus Cho in his new threads.
Are they dressed for a business meeting, a bar or a battle? Well, seeing as how they're superheroes they'll probably be wearing the same clothes to all three occasions, so you have to dress them for the one the speaks best to the character's personality.

As for weapons, a rapier or a katana are probably the most efficient weapons if you're not going to use a firearm, but let's face it, we're talking about style here, and yeah, that two-sided lance is an interesting one. I've only drawn her with it in one scene so far-- [link] -- where I had her spinning it to ward off one harpy while she attacked another one. Ive got some other ideas of cool ways she could use it, so I hope I get another chance.

So, hope I've answered your questions! Talk to you later!
